PRC lobbying in congress enabled years of technology transfer from the U.S. High Tech sector that is used for Digital Authoritarianism overseas.
Currently the executive hands are somehow tied because of mutual interest of some lawmakers, shareholders and the CCP. The loopholes in lawmaking derailed the executive attempt to protect the American people from the prying eyes that may be accessed in TikTok, WeChat and other platforms.
Alex Stamos, a former chief security officer of Facebook, proposes laws and regulations that would hold big tech companies to be accountable for disseminating technologies and platforms that enable human rights violations for the purpose of gaining profits while ignoring those risks. In his statement the panelist included Facebook and Apple as companies that made fortunes using this approach. The real question is why Congress didn’t surpress Digital Authoritarianism before it was too late as it should during 20 years. Since Apple supply chain and clientele is dependent on the CCP it would be very challenging to roll back the situation.
